3 Reasons to Wear Sunglasses in Winter (And all year long)
Jackie Kennedy was known for her famous sunglasses. When she left one of her positions in publishing, a clerk opened one of the desk drawers in her office and found a mountain of sunglasses.
Recently, at Levo.com an article listed five fashion tips from Jackie Kennedy. One of them was, “Never be without your sunglasses!”
This tip might infer that sunglasses are important all year long, for a wide variety of reasons. But, for purposes of this article, let’s look at three reasons why sunglasses are vitally important in winter.
  1. Snow Blindness: Here is a fact that is significant when it comes to wearing sunglasses in winter. According to the Vision Council of America, 85 per cent of UV rays of the sun are mirrored up. This means that the glare of the sun on snow can cause injuries. If the individual who lives in snowy areas begins to feel his or her eyes twitching, a gritty feeling in the eyes, or watery eyes, after being out in the snow, skiing or snowmobiling, without sunglasses, snow blindness may be the reason.
  2. Dry Eye Syndrome: The condition known as dry eye syndrome afflicts those who spend time outdoors, especially in winter. The eye becomes aggravated, red and dry. This condition is prevalent in winter because of high winds and the UV rays of the sun.
  3. Goggle Tan: Sunglasses have always made a fashion statement and now they are also producing new words and slang. A Goggle Tan is defined in the Urban Dictionary as, “a tan that appears only on the lower half of the face, generally a result of winter sporting in the sun. The goggles shield the upper portion of your face, while the lower part is still exposed to the sun thus creating a homer simpson-esque tan” Those who wear sunglasses while participating in winter sports often acquire this white or light area around the area where the glasses protect the eyes and face.
Sunglasses are a small investment that will deliver tremendous benefits. The fashion statement, along with the health advantages are worth every cent.
